buffalo wire head
An incredible conversation piece! The wire buffalo head is a witty reference to the mounted-head trophies of stiff-upper-lip, pith-helmet colonial times. Crafted by hand, thick gauge galvanized wire forms a sturdy frame and the basic abstract form of the buffalo head, whilst finer wire is evenly spaced and tightly wrapped around the frame to complete the three dimensional piece. Electroplating gives the wire art work its warm bronze finish. Fantastic as a feature above a fireplace or on the wall.
A unique art form of South Africa, the origins of wire art are most likely from rural Kwazulu-Natal. For many years, due to a lack of resources to buy proper toys, youngsters fashioned their own toys out of discarded wire coat hangers, tin cans and whatever else they could get their hands on.
The buffalo head is created by an artist of a fair trade organisation in South Africa. This company has a social mission of tackling unemployment and poverty in South Africa.
