Hand-made Christmas decorations from South Africa.
With the festive season around the corner, a unique collection of hand-made Christmas decorations has just been unpacked at SOUTH. Instead of the gaudy mass-produced Christmas decorations which flood our markets annually, these special hand-crafted pieces are highly individual and will add to the fantasy and beauty of Christmas.
Each decoration is designed by a South African fair trade organisation from Cape Town. They teaches previously unemployed people from local townships as part of a social upliftment programme. The crafters create from wire & beads whimsical artworks, from delicate wire candle holders to Christmas decoration in the shape of Christmas trees, hearts and angels.
A unique art form of South Africa, the origins of wire art are most likely from the hills of rural Kwazulu-Natal. For many years, due to a lack of resources to buy proper toys, youngsters fashioned their own toys out of discarded wire coat hangers, tin cans and whatever else they could get their hands on.
Crafted using galvanized wire, a wire frame forms the basic shape of the angel, star, heart & Christmas tree. Fine wire with beads is then wrapped around the edge and finished with a hook for hanging on the Christmas tree.
